How to Peel and Dice and Onion
Peeling onions isn’t pleasant to do at the best of times but there is an easy way to do it...
- First remove the excess outside paper of the onion.
- Then using a sharp knife cut the onion in half.
- Working one half at a time take off the end that was not attached to the plant ... this is the end that was attached to the plant ... and peel back that top layer or two of skin but don’t detach it completely. The reason we’re doing this is because the end that was in fact attached to the plant is where most of the sulphuric compounds of the onion are located and that’s what causes you to cry.
- The next thing to do is to chop the onion by slicing it down halfway through the centre and then using your knife, cut it vertically in a fanlike motion almost up to the end, but not completely.
- And then using your knife just slice through the fanned pieces into dice.
- You can minimise the release of the compounds that make you cry by popping the onion into the freezer for about 20 minutes before you cut it.
